Recovery Data Off Your Broken Hard Drive
Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 | Author: admin

A damaged hard disk drive is one of the most unpleasant types of hardware failure. No, I don’t mean that a burned processor or a damaged memory block are more enjoyable. Not at all - they are also disasters and in terms of money generally it is more expensive to replace a processor than to replace a hard drive but damaged hard drives have one very irritating property - you lose not only your hardware but also all or some of your data. Data is priceless and if you don’t have a backup copy of it, then you are lost.

However, not all hard drive damages are that bad. There are cases when the hard drive is damaged but the data on it is alive. So, if your hard drive crashes, don’t panic but hope for the best - i.e. the drive might have become an obsolete piece of machinery but at least your data is not buried inside. There are different strategies for evacuating data from a damaged hard drive and which one you can use depends on the sort of damage, as we’ll see next.

What Is a Damaged Hard Drive

A damaged hard drive come come in many flavors. In addition to that, there are many cases when the drive is not damaged but due to some reason the data can’t be accessed. For a non-specialist all these cases might look the same - I can’t access my files, so my hard drive must have gone off, while in reality the hard drive is perfectly OK but your data is unaccessible because of some prosaic reason.

Without getting into technical details, the shortest (and hardly most precise) explanation of a completely damaged hard drive is that this hard drive can’t be accessed with any means even by a qualified PC technician. So, unless you are a PC technician yourself, you can’t determine on your own if the hard drive is totally dead or not. However, since there are many cases when a drive is still alive but it can’t be accessed due to a variety of reasons (most frequently software issues) you can try some of the approaches in the next section and see if they work. Even if they don’t work, they will do no harm, but this does not mean you shouldn’t be cautious when applying them.

What You Can Do on Your Own

One of the cases when the hard drive is not physically damaged but is unaccessible due to software reasons is when the partition on which the data resides is inaccessible, or at least not from your operating system. In this case you can use an alternative operating system, for instance a Live CD with a Linux distribution and see if you will have more luck accessing the partition. This will work, if the partition table on your computer is not totally messed up. If you see that the data is still unaccessible, don’t attempt to mess up with the partition table because you can make things worse. Instead, hurry up and find a PC technician and pray that he or she will be able to recover your data for you.

Another case when the data might still be alive is when the drive has been formatted on a high level. If the drive has been formatted on a low level, the extraction techniques will not work because the data has been physically destroyed. There are many tools to unformat a formatted drive and you can have a look at the ones listed here: http://recovery-review.com/unformat-tools/. Most of the tools are paid ones but you can find free as well. Hiren’s Boot CD comes with a bundle of data recovery tools and I generally prefer to use them than any other tools.

Software problems are common but hardware problems - I.e. bad sectors or a damaged controller are also not an exception. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about them. If data is sucked by a bad sector, then in 99% of the cases it is gone for good. The 1% stands for the rare chance that you have made copies of exactly this file and the copy is not on a bad sector but this is really a lucky exception. You can take the hard drive to a service but it is unlikely that they will be able to do much.

Another technique you can try on your own without risk to make the damage more severe is to go to your HDD manufacturer’s site and see if they provide retrieval tools. Usually hard drive manufacturers provide diagnostic tools but if you are lucky, chances are that you will find a data retrieval tool as well. Very often the diagnostic tools themselves not only check for problems but they also can fix some issues, so they could help you save your data as well.

The above mentioned techniques to extract data from a damaged hard drive are only a small fraction of what can be done. However, many of the other techniques are more complicated and they do require some knowledge about a hard drive’s architecture, so I wouldn’t recommend you to apply them because you can make a lot of damage. Some of the techniques that require opening the computer case or messing with the parts of the disk itself are too dangerous to try at home. No, you will hardly destroy your home but you can surely further damage the hard drive, making it impossible even for a technician to help you. Additionally, you can void the warranty for the computer system, which is hardly what you want to achieve.

Take the Hard Drive to a PC Technician

If you have tried to rescue the data from your hard drive on your own to no avail, you have no choice but to take it to a service. A PC service has more equipment than the standard user and there is a chance they will be able to help you but still, don’t expect miracles. In some cases data extraction services could be free of charge, especially if you have bought the hard drive from them and the warranty has not expired yet but in other cases you will have to pay.

As you probably guess, fees vary. As a rule, the cost depends on the volume of data that needs to be extracted but generally it does not cost a fortune - you might be able find somebody to do it for around $200. Still, if your drive has serious physical damages, even if you go to a more expensive data rescue lab, there is no guarantee that your data can and will be restored.

Skilled PC technicians have more tools and techniques and their disposal. If you are interested in contacting a reputable company, try the service listed below. If you would like to learn more about hard drive data recovery techniques, here are two good articles: www.wikihow.com/Recover-a-Dead-Hard-Disk and www.networktutorials.info/datarecovery.html. Some of the information in these articles might be useful to diagnose the problem, but don’t even think of applying the techniques on your own. It is really risky!

As of late I have been very focused around content it’s accessibility and the information overload that is occurring online. It’s apparent that the Internet, as it has progressed, has produced a normal fragmentation of the web. Simply put, there are numerous online destinations that we utlize, support or desire access to than we have adequate tools to access them with. With each online location offering and executing around a unique proposition, the Internet has become a vast resource for all of us.

Think about it. How many social networks are we a part of? How many shopping sites do we jump to and from? How many job boards do we use to post jobs or find job seekers? And further, how much of that data is relevant to our needs that we do not even know it exists online? How much of it can search engines

like Google and Yahoo capture on page 1 without being forced to essentially discard the rest due to low viewership numbers on page 2 and 3? The variety and breadth of the Internet is being lost as fast as it is being created because our traditional methods of accessing this data are slowly but surely becoming less adequate. As more and more unique services are born, the more and more fragmentized accessibility becomes.

So what is the answer? One answer is more time. More time to be able to utilize all the different kinds of unique services one by one. When we search for a product or service to buy we can search Google, Ebay, Amazon and many other choices. The second option is aggregation. In the same way that a search engine aggregates and indexes websites and web content, we require a mechanism that aggregates the variety of unique services, not just websites, that are available to us and we care about. Aggregation is key to maintaining accessibility of the entire sophisticated web.

Take Indeed.com for example, an all in one search engine and dashboard for job seekers. Indeed combines, integrates and displays a large percentage of all jobs published out in cyber space in one search. The innovation not only provides convenience but also defragments the accessibility of all job sites online. Indeed is a prime example of a much needed and accepted aggregation service for the online job space.

Or take the portal LeapFish.com, an all in one Internet dashboard that works to capture the variety of the web by integrating results from major online destinations including YouTube, Ebay and others in a single search query. LeapFish lends more accessibility to all of the different kinds of data we care about. As a result users are conveniently surprised with information that they wouldn’t have normally been aware of had they used a traditional engine. For example a very interesting overview  can be seen here.
Aggregation is big area of growth. For entrepreneurs, grappling with the information overload can deliver great value. I foresee big growth in aggregation and the creation of more filters to give us the information we truly desire.

Buying Laptops Online
Thursday, May 14th, 2009 | Author: admin

olpc-laptopAs technology advances, the focus of most businesses has now moved to providing one basic need for consumers – convenience. Since the internet revolution, more and more people prefer to shop online, from the comfort of their homes. Hence, providing them with a variety choice of products on the web is the top most priority for entrepreneurs today. With increased choice available online, consumers are now able to buy just about anything on the web. The list of products sold online includes clothes, accessories and even technological devices like cameras and laptops. However, some things need to be kept in mind before buying laptops online.

It’s advisable to scan a number of online shopping portals to find the best deals in laptops. One will also be able to compare the variety of accessories and features that go with laptops. One needs to first analyze their needs and then buy laptops according to their personal or professional requirements. Remember, technology among laptops changes almost every year, with companies bringing in newer products with better features. Therefore, conducting a thorough research on these gadgets is a must.

Price is a major factor when it comes to buying laptops online. Notebooks are generally more expensive than conventional desktops. Therefore, it’s imperative to keep your budget in mind when you go shopping, and try and find the best laptops for a lower price. Some online portals offer a variety of low price laptops to choose from.

It’s important to thoroughly study the features of different laptop computers, before making a choice. At times, one tends to buy a laptop with excessive features, but hardly uses any of them. Besides these notebooks usually need to be upgraded from time to time, which can be a concern for the average user.

x360_laptop_main Some consumers tend to go for a specific brand when shopping for notebooks. However, its better not to restrict oneself to one particular brand, as often a lot of new manufacturers generally offer the same set of features in a laptop, for a much lower price. Nevertheless, don’t go for a manufacturer that you have never heard of, as it could be selling a spurious product.

Finally, before you go ahead to buy Laptops, make sure you check the warranties and do some research on references on the product. Reviews of previous customers prove to be a great source of information, and help one know of the pros and cons of the product. This is another advantage consumers get of buying laptops online.

The Ugly Computer Virus
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 | Author: admin

For those of us who have had a computer virus or spyware appear on their computer out of nowhere, you know that it is not one of the most pleasant experiences. Well, if it makes you feel any better - it happens to the best of us. Some of the symptoms you will see if your computer has been infected are:

  • Your computer slows down to a crawl
  • Your computer acts like it is possessed - it starts sending out hundreds of emails on its own to people you do not know
  • You get a call from your IP provider that your computer is spamming the internet.
  • You are getting hundreds of popup ads appearing on your screen for no reason
  • Your computer crashes
  • Files are missing from your computer - and you can’t blame your spouse, your kids or your dog
  • Your computer is running just great until someone sends you an email attachment that you open and now your computer is acting crazy

Electronic mail (e-mail) is the principal way of exchanging information across the Internet and within networks. antivirus_software_250x251

You can think of your system’s e-mail functionality as being provided by mail servers (IP providers) and mail clients (your computer). When a mail server delivers the mail that you compose or forward on, it also stores the mail in your account until you collect it. A mail client is associated with a particular user. It enables the user to work with mail - for example, by sending, retrieving, and composing messages, and by reading received mail.

There are several hazards inherent in the use of e-mail:

  • denial-of-service attacks
  • illegitimate access to the mail server
  • message interception
  • spreading malicious code

Most malicious code that infects computers and networks does so through the medium of e-mail. In order to help safeguard your computer from the hazards of e-mail, you should follow best practice at all times, especially when it concerns:

  • attachments
  • suspect subject lines
  • being alert for viruses
  • mail-client configuration

The first place to start is with Anti-Virus Software. Avoid using any anti-virus software that is free from a web site you are not familiar with. Just because it is free, does not mean it is good for you or your computer. One important option you want from your anti-virus software is the automatic update feature. Each time you start your computer, it will automatically check to see if there has been an update to your anti-virus software and will it will perform the update. If you are running your computer with an anti-virus software that does not update, your computer will not be protected against the latest viruses. Some of the more common anti-virus software include Norton, McAfee, Computer Associates, Kaspersky and Bit Defender. Most Anti-Virus Software will have annual fees.

When you have an Anti-Virus software installed on your computer, scanning may begin at any time, when something triggers it from your computer. Each approach has its own benefits and drawbacks. It is generally best to read your anti-virus software documentation to decide which security setting is best for you. If you are not sure which one to use, most times the default setting will be acceptable, or you may wish to have an authorized computer repair person setup your Anti-Virus Software.

One of the security decisions you need to make is to decide whether to permit e-mail attachments. Prohibiting them can greatly improve the security of your computer. If you do not prohibit email attachments, you should at least delete any emails with attached files - especially if you do not know the sender. You also should also avoid opening any email with an attached file that is quite large.

Popup Windowscomputer-virus-break-pc2

Popup windows can be both useful and an annoyance. On most desktop computers there are usually at least one and in many cases multiple popup blockers running simultaneously. Built into your Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari browser is a popup blocker. You can turn it on or off, or even allow temporary access to view a single website’s popup window. To enable or disable the popup blocker, you will find it in your browser’s top tool bar. The popup blocker is found under the “Tools” menu with Internet Explorer, where you can change the settings. With Firefox, you can turn on the popup blocker in the Tools > Options > Content tab. It is best practice to have your popup blocker on and if you want to view a website’s popup window, you can list the URL of that website as a trusted site. You will also find if you are running a Google, Yahoo or MSN toolbar, there are additional popup blockers running under each of those toolbars.

Spyware

In addition to running an Anti-Virus software on your computer it is highly recommended to run Anti-Spyware software in addition. Many anti-virus bundles today also include anti-spyware. More computers today are infected from Spyware than viruses and anyone who has had this experience knows what a nightmare it can be. If you suspect your computer already has a virus or you have spyware running on your system, it is highly recommended to take the computer to a reputable computer repair person. In most cases installing Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software after your computer has been infected, will do little to correct the problem.

If you are looking for more technical information regarding the dreaded Computer Virus or Spyware and about their removal, should look at A+ books or CD-ROMs which are available online or at a local bookstore.

While this is a completely new offering from Acer, it utilizes many components from other Acer notebooks, primarily being from the Aspire 3100. It is so new, in fact, that instead of having its own drivers it shares many of the same drivers as the 3100. So new that many of the specs released by Acer America were wrong.

This notebook was on sale at Circuit City for around $849 store price without rebate. It also came with a free printer, notebook bag, and router. With the Circuit City Advantage Plus Protection plan (which covers for accidental drops and spills), the total price was exactly $1000. I am a college student and need a notebook that I can take to class, run engineering programs on, and play some games.

    Updating Device Drivers
    Monday, April 13th, 2009 | Author: admin

Occasionally, hardware devices require updates in order to function properly. While the reasons are various, it typically relates to updates by the manufacturer that result in compatibility issues. In addition, if you install a new piece of hardware, the installation could overwrite an existing driver and create conflict with another device. In this scenario, the existing device driver may require an upgrade. When a hardware device starts to act awry, updating the corresponding driver often solves all the problems.

    Updating 101

The easiest way to update a device driver on a Windows operating system is via the Device Manager utility. There are numerous ways to open this utility, including accessing the “Start” menu, clicking on “Control Panel” and selecting “Device Manager” from the list of items. Regardless of how it is accessed, the purpose of the Device Manager is to list all the hardware devices present on your computer. If you notice that a device is listed with a yellow question mark, this usually indicates that the device isn’t functioning properly.

You can choose the device you want to update by right-clicking it and selecting Update Driver Software from the sub-menu. From here, you have two choices: you can select the option that automatically scans the internet for updated drivers, or choose the option that allows you to use an updated driver stored or a disk or folder. Simply make a selection and follow the proceeding instructions.

    Automatically vs. Manually Updating

If you want to view details about a particular driver before making updates, right-click the device and then hit “Properties.” Next, click the “Driver” tab. You should see information pertaining to the driver, as well as options for making updates, disabling and enabling the driver, uninstalling the driver, and utilizing a roll back feature. Rolling back the driver allows you to revert back to the previous status if an update doesn’t function properly.

If you prefer to manually update a device driver, you will need to find a new driver and also save a backup copy of the old one just in case. There are many software applications available that will scan your system, automatically download, install and backup new drivers. These programs work quickly and tend to be very easy to use.

Tips and Factors to Keep in Mind

There are some drivers that may cause your system to become unstable if not they are not installed properly or installed for the wrong device. You can launch the Device Manager to find out if a particular device is working properly. If not, an error code will be displayed. If you notice that a device isn’t working properly, click on the “troubleshoot” button in the Device Manager to initiate the troubleshooting process.

Another option you have is writing down the given error codes and trying to get technical support from the company who manufactured the device. If you update a driver and it doesn’t work, uninstall any software applications you recently installed. Because it could be the software that is creating the conflict, check with the vendor to see if an update or patch is available to fix the issue.
